Comedy, romance and a lot of headaches
set sail on the Caribbean.

Carol Zuminello thinks a five-day, four-night Caribbean cruise will help her forget her problems—including, but not limited to, self-induced unemployment and a boyfriend who likes his space.

Thanks to her cranky teenage niece, a retiree with a secret past, and the smoldering safety officer she can't seem to shake, Carol is about to set sail on a voyage of self-discovery. Whether she wants to or not.

Comedy, romance, human connection, and the courage to listen to your heart propel this travel-centric comedy set in 2010 against the backdrop of an oldies cruise celebrating the California Sound of the nineteen-sixties.

Welcome!

I'm a writer and editor, primarily for newspapers, nonprofits, and businesses. I’ve been writing creatively (fiction, plays, musical books) for years, and it's finally time to add something new to my resume: My first novel, "Serendipity at Sea." (Spoiler alert: It contains all the jokes I can’t really use in my freelance gigs.)

I spent more than 20 years as an editor and reporter at the Chicago Tribune and, before that, several community weeklies throughout suburban Chicago. Most recently, I was a writer in the Communications and Marketing departments at Zurich North America.

The drummer who helped inspire this book

Paul Enna (1948-2010)

My eldest brother, Paul, was a phenomenal drummer who provided a percussive soundtrack throughout my formative years in our rambling (code word for “dilapidated”) house in Rockford, Illinois.

He practiced all the time. Two parents, one Italian grandma, five kids addicted to television, various dogs...the drums were not necessarily the loudest thing in that house. But he gave it a shot.

By his teens, Paul was performing all over town, wowing the crowd with countless surf rock classics, including, of course, that anthem for drummers, "Wipe Out."

I took Paul’s photo on a Kodak Instamatic (!) around 1966.
